He’s developing our character and weaving a plan through us that He will use to bless and save others. That’s what we find in the story of one of the old guys in Genesis. His name is Joseph. He is a man of character who faced challenge after challenge, which God used to save a whole race of people.

Integrity

We meet another one of the old guys in Genesis. His name is Joseph. He chose the way of integrity and was punished for it in the short run. The core of integrity is being trustworthy at all times. A trustworthy character does what’s right even when we don’t know how things will turn out. God will take full responsibility for a life fully devoted to him. Our job is to follow Jesus faithfully regardless of the short-term outcomes and leave the long term outcomes to God.

Wrestling

We meet an old guy named Jacob who wrestled with God. Like Jacob, we need to enter into an honest wrestling match with God. Confident of our self-determined ways and plans, we enter the ring with God and sooner or later we’ll be gently wounded by God. When we are finally broken and limping after our encounter with God face to face, we move from total self-sufficiency to dependence on Him. It is only in full dependence on God that we will experience God’s full blessing and live well.

Friendship

One of the old guys in the Old Testament became friends with God. His name is Abraham. He knew God and His character well. He trusted God and knew that God could never harm him. That kind of deep friendship helped Abraham to obey God when asked to do the unthinkable–kill his own son at the command of God. It was the ultimate test of friendship.

The challenge for all of us is to be willing to let go or leave where we are in order to move to a better place in life. You can’t stay in the same place and expect to get to a better place. This is the story of Abraham. God had a huge vision and plan for him and ultimately the world. Abraham’s first challenge was being willing to trust God enough to leave that which was familiar and known to adventure to a place unknown, but full of promise.

What We Long For

Our identity is formed by things to which we have attached ourselves: family, residence, job/career, friends, gifts and abilities. What mirror are we looking into? The Apostle Paul wrote the first three chapters of Ephesians to tell new Christ followers that because of Christ they have a new identity “in Christ.” The phrase “in Christ” or “in Him” appears 7 times in 11 verses in our text. Getting this is perhaps the most exhilarating, empowering concept of our inner formation!

Sometimes we need to slow down and savor the flavor of the food. Christian meditation and memorization helps us do that in a spiritual meal. In meditation, we take time to really focus, dwell and deeply reflect on a passage or phrase from the Bible. It is in meditation of God’s Word that we discover the most profound personal messages God has for us. When we memorize God’s Word, we allow it to stay with us to shape and transform us continually.

Discipline

Hell is real. However, what is surprising is that in Jesus’ teaching, hell is primarily a place for the religious hypocrites to fear, not those struggling in sin. Jesus turned the hatred and fearful use of hell by the religious leaders towards the “sinners” right back on them.

Enough is never enough. The desire for more and more is actually a form of greed. The antidote to greed begins with contentment. We will explore greed and contentment through one of Jesus’ stories in Luke 12:13-21

The Blueprint

This has to get practical and real. We can’t just have an “idea” and a hope, but a plan.

Develop a spending plan to limit consumption.

A budget answers these practical questions:

How much is enough?
What is for us? How can I be content with just what I need?
What is for God? How can I be “rich toward God?”

Prayerfully develop a plan that creates a budget to limit our selfish appetite. It doesn’t have to be complicated. This is not a burden, but FREEDOM!

A Sample Starting Budget

10% Tithe (of gross income)
After Tithe and Taxes:
5% Savings (to avoid future debt)
5% Eliminate debt (pay creditors)
40% Food, transportation & household expenses
30% Mortgage – Rent
5% Medical
10% Vacation, entertainment, recreation
5% Reserve for the unplanned/unexpected

Pantano Christian Church has a Personal Financial Counseling ministry available to help you develop a budget. It can seem overwhelming and we’ll help you. The contact information is near the end of the information in the Financial Toolbox or just call the church office.
Crown Life Groups. In Jan. ’07 we’ll start our new 12 week life groups that will help you discover God’s financial principles to help you get out of debt, develop a budget and discover contentment. Call the church office for orientation times.
Give generously. Prayerfully consider your giving to God for the next year. How will you be “rich toward God?” We’ve provided a Kingdom First card to help you determine your giving to God this next year. Do not sign the part you give to us. We do not want your name. We do not build a budget off this card as you’ll notice it only states the percentage of your income you are giving and no amount. This is just a tool for you to use to help you grow in being rich toward God.
