The real focus of the story Jesus told of the “Prodigal Son” is the character of the father. He’s the amazing one in the story. His heart’s desire is to bring his boys into his home and family. He offers an extravagant grace, mercy, kindness, forgiveness and love to his sons. The father is a picture of our Heavenly Father who more than anything wants us to come home, share a meal and rebuild a relationship with him. The Father is waiting and ready to celebrate our return home.

We are looking at the older son in the story Jesus told about two sons and a father. The older son represents the kind of person who tries to earn God’s favor through doing good and being good. He’s very proud about his accomplishments. But in trying hard to be good and do good, we, like the older son, miss the greatest blessing of all – our Heavenly Father himself. We are saved not by being good, but by accepting the invitation to join the Father. We are invited to take a seat at the Father’s table.

We’ve all messed up. At one time or another, most of us have walked away from God our Father. In this Jesus story, we’ll look at a son who walked away from his father. But the story ends when the son decides to go home. What does he discover? He encounters a father who is not condemning or punitive, but a father that runs to welcome him home. Our Heavenly Father’s heart is always on the lookout to draw us home to him.

When home is a really good place, there is nothing like coming home. In God’s plan, “home” is where we are family, loved, accepted unconditionally and surrounded by hope and encouragement. God, our Heavenly Father, invites us to come home, to the place He’s prepared for us. He longs to say to us “Welcome Home!”
