Communion is our weekly opportunity to declare that we are sold out to Jesus.  Weekly we renew our vows at this time.  We do it weekly because we need to do this as often as we gather together in corporate worship (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:17-34 “when you come together”).

I want to share part of a wonderful communion prayer/poem I found (Leadership Journal – Winter, 2010 pg. 32).  It says so much of what I love about communion.

In your last meal with your friends
Before being betrayed
You shared bread and wine
We share it again to remember you
Christ’s body is broken
We are Christ’s body, we are broken
May Christ’s broken body nourish you
in all the right places
Christ’s body is wounded
We are Christ’s body, we are wounded
May the blood that flowed from Christ’s
wounds heal you in all the right places
Christ has died
Christ has risen
Christ will come again
This is the table of Christ
Today it is literally made of our brokenness
A sign that Christ welcomes us all as we are
There is no need to pretend
and no need to hide
So come…

I’ve had some questions about communion.  Someone asked “How old must a child be to receive communion?”  There is no set age.  Any child old enough to make a decision to follow Jesus and be baptized should partake in communion.

And I’ve been asked:  “Can visitors take communion?”  Yes, communion served in our services isn’t just for Pantano members; it is for any believer who has committed themselves to follow Jesus.
