Hi, my name is Sandra Carter and I am the Shelter Branch Director for PCC Disaster Action Team. After moving here from Arkansas 4 years ago, I realized that something was missing in my life and that the missing piece was the volunteer work that I’d done with a health clinic in AR – so I started looking for a place to serve here in Tucson. When I heard about the Shelter Program in DAT, I knew that was how I could best serve my new community.
In the past, we participated in a Winter Hospitality program in conjunction with the Salvation Army. On the evenings for which we volunteered our facilities, the Salvation Army sent over 9 to 15 men needing shelter on a cold night. After a brief welcome and overview of the facility, we ate dinner, watched a movie or a ball game on TV, pop some popcorn maybe . . . and hit the sack by 10. Everyone was up at 5:30and after breakfast, the bus picked them up by 6:30 AM.
Now that we are practiced in a shelter set up, we believe our program is taking us in a different direction.

Red Cross Emergency Shelter
We are affiliated with the American Red Cross to provide sheltering services in the event of a disaster. A good example is when the refugees from Katrina hit town. Had we been activated, we could have handled the eighty refugees that were sent to Tucson. Our most recent deployment was in July when Ajo experienced a power outage as a result of severe thunderstorms. We were requested to help in the emergency Red Cross shelter as well as bring our food service unit to help with the evecuees in the area.
Come join us’ we’d love to have you visit!
